Direct Democracy
It is quite futile to be fighting nuclear power, militarism, and all the other bad policies our government pursues, while that same government continues to rule us, because it is an incorrigible repeat offender, and it continues to proliferate bad work faster than we can stop it. The only answer is that we must transform this system of government into a direct democracy.
The way to do this is through a Constitutional amendment giving the people the power to decide public policy through referendums. The role of elected representatives should be to carry out the will of the people. The measures that will be voted upon should be chosen by a preliminary vote on a roster of proposed measures. Once on the ballot, there should be public forums and debates on the issue. Referendums could be held as frequently as every week.
The voting could be done in voting booths, but it would be better for people to meet in their communities, and discuss the issues before taking a vote, which should be done by a show of hands so that all present can count the ayes and nays. Both methods of voting, the voting booth and the community meeting, should be used to accommodate people who can't attend the meeting.
When the Constitution was written, direct democracy was impractical because of the distances and slow means of communication. Now that we're all wired together, it's time to bring democracy up to date with technology. It is said that the public is too ignorant or easily deceived to make their own decisions. But look how our elected representatives with all their superior wisdom are squandering our resources and shepherding our planet to extinction. It's hard to see how our legislators are showing better judgment than the people would.
Supposedly, if the people don't like what their representatives are doing, they can vote somebody else in. But the people are scarcely aware of what their representatives are doing. Besides, people vote for a single candidate who makes many decisions. While they might agree with his position on nuclear power...
We can either unleash the end of the world, or we can lead the world in Transformation. We have power, wealth, and freedom, a combination which no other nation's people possess. If any nation is going to lead the world to the New Way of health and harmony, it will be the U.S.
Bringing our community we live in together is the first step. We will have to connect with those who are probably not particularly active or aware in terms of social issues.
Music and art are more attractive than words. Celebration is part of the message and solution. Therefore, let us dance and make music outside in public. In case of emergency, such as economic panic or war, we should make music and dance in the street as we proclaim that the present state of government and capitalism are done with. We must go out and talk to everyone, and call for public meetings to get ourselves organized.
As we squarely consider the worst case scenarios, let us find hope in the thought that the Transformation can happen instantly whenever we need it most. Every human innately responds to good will and justice. The people have been prepared by every humanistic philosophy from Christianity to Marxism, as well as popular songs. for the ultimate dawning of the age of peace and harmony. Perhaps a dire emergency would push us to that universal love and respect for the planet and its inhabitants, which is the only route to our salvation.
The new way is an emotion as well as a rational thought, which can spread from person to person as quickly as a smile or a hug. Indeed, our songs of exultation will echo around the world as soon as our communities start the happy chorus.
